Dazed Digital published a feature interview with Shantell Martin and me about the Bowie 1976 NFT collection — our collaboration with Playboy inspired by the September 1976 Playboy Interview with David Bowie.
The piece explored how we took Cameron Crowe's original interview and Andrew Kent's photographs and brought them into a new medium — graphic design, 3D animation, and augmented reality. We discussed the process of reducing the interview text to key quotes, dividing them into three thematic categories, and building animated compositions that gave the sense of moving through the narrative of the original article.
Shantell spoke about being drawn to the most provocative parts of the interview — Bowie's candid reflections on sex, drugs, and rock and roll — while I discussed the privilege of interpreting those elements alongside Kent's original photographs and Shantell's line work.
The Bowie 1976 collection was part of Nifty Pride on Nifty Gateway, with all primary sale proceeds supporting GLAAD.
